💧 Excretory Products & Osmoregulation

Excretion eliminates toxic nitrogenous metabolic byproducts (ammonia, urea, uric acid) while osmoregulation maintains constant osmotic pressure and ionic balance in bodily fluids.


1. 🧪 Nitrogenous Waste Classification

Toxicity & Water Requirement Order: Ammonia (Ammonotelic)>Urea (Ureotelic)>Uric Acid (Uricotelic)
  • Ammonotelism: Excretes highly toxic NH3; requires immense water (\a500mL H2O/N). Examples: Bony fishes, aquatic amphibians, aquatic insects.
  • Ureotelism: Ammonia converted to urea via Ornithine (Krebs-Henseleit) cycle in the liver. Examples: Mammals, terrestrial amphibians, marine cartilaginous fishes.
  • Uricotelism: Excretes insoluble uric acid pellets/paste with minimum water loss (\a10mL H2O/N). Examples: Reptiles, Birds, Land snails, Insects.

2. 🔬 Nephron Filtration Dynamics (GFR & NFP)

(Since daily urine output is \a1.5Liters, >99% of filtrate is reabsorbed by renal tubules!)


3. 🔄 The Counter-Current Multiplier System

Maintains a hyperosmotic medullary gradient (300mOsmol/L at cortex 1200mOsmol/L at inner renal medulla):

  - Highly PERMEABLE to Water                  - Completely IMPERMEABLE to Water
  - Impermeable to Electrolytes (NaCl)         - Actively TRANSPORTS NaCl out into interstitium
  - Filtrate becomes HYPERTONIC (1200 mOsm/L)   - Filtrate becomes HYPOTONIC (200 mOsm/L)
  • Vasa Recta Counter-Current Exchange: Blood flows in the opposite direction to Henle's loop, passively taking up reabsorbed water and returning NaCl to the interstitium, preserving the gradient without dissipating it.

4. 🎛️ Hormonal Regulation of Kidney Function: The RAAS Axis

  Dehydration / Low BP / Low GFR ──► JG Cells of Kidney secrete RENIN

Atrial Natriuretic Factor (ANF) Antagonism

When blood volume and atrial blood pressure rise, atrial walls secrete ANF (Atrial Natriuretic Peptide). ANF causes vasodilation and promotes Na+ excretion (natriuresis), acting as a natural check and balance against the RAAS axis.
