🦕 Evolution & Population Genetics

Evolution is the process of cumulative, heritable genetic and phenotypic change in populations across generations, driven by mutation, recombination, natural selection, and genetic drift.

1. ⚡ Chemical Origin of Life: The Oparin-Haldane Theory & Miller-Urey Experiment (1953)

  • Oparin & Haldane: Life originated from non-living organic molecules in a reducing primitive atmosphere (devoid of free O2; rich in CH4,NH3,H2,H2O vapor).
  • Stanley Miller & Harold Urey Experiment:
    • Spark discharge chamber with tungsten electrodes at 800C.
    • Gas mixture: CH4:NH3:H2=2:1:2 with boiling water flask providing water vapor.
    • Condensed products after 1 week: Amino acids (Alanine, Glycine, Aspartic acid), purines, pyrimidines, and organic acids.

4. 🧮 The Hardy-Weinberg Principle & Population Genetics

In a large, randomly mating population free from evolutionary forces, allele frequencies and genotype frequencies remain constant across generations:

p+q=1.0p2+2pq+q2=1.0

Where:

  • p = Frequency of dominant allele (A).
  • q = Frequency of recessive allele (a).
  • p2 = Frequency of homozygous dominant genotype (AA).
  • 2pq = Frequency of heterozygous genotype (Aa).
  • q2 = Frequency of homozygous recessive genotype (aa).

4.1 Factors Disrupting Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium:

1. Gene Migration/Flow|2. Genetic Drift (Sewall Wright Effect)|3. Mutation|4. Recombination|5. Natural Selection
  • Founder Effect: When a small migrant group colonizes a new habitat, their allele frequencies determine the genetic structure of the new colony.
  • Bottleneck Effect: Dramatic reduction in population size due to natural disasters randomly alters allele frequencies.
